More than 2 million people in Arusha and Njombe Regions
stand to benefit from the special poverty reduction programs funded by
the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries through the
Tanzania Social Action Fund.
The Director of TASAF, Mr Ladislaus Mwamanga explained in Arusha that OPEC is pledging US $ 16.4 million ( about 30.5 billion/- ) to execute community development projects in 14 cities, Municipal and District councils in the two regions in the Northern and Southern Highlands of Tanzania.
The Poverty Reduction programs supported by OPEC will be implemented in sync with the recently launched Phase Three of the Tanzania Social Action Fund (TASAF) Projects that are aimed at improving lives the same councils.
Through series of the program, TASAF will provide educational subsidies to households as well as building and improving infrastructures to cater for water, education and health for the seven councils in Arusha, namely, Arusha-City, Arusha-Rural, Meru, Karatu, Longido, Monduli and Ngorongoro.
In Njombe Region the projects will be executed in Ludewa, Makete, Njombe, Makambako and Wanging’ombe Councils.

“Poor households will be given opportunities to
increase their domestic earnings, access essential services such as
clean water , education and gain temporary employment vacancies,"
explained the TASAF Director.
The Arusha Regional Commissioner, Mr Daudi-Felix Ntibenda, lauded the government for once more considering the people in Arusha, pointing out that the region has been benefitting throughout the three phases of TASAF with commendable results.
Irrigation projects, including modern drip irrigations, tree planting, and prevention of soil erosion, rural road infrastructure building, and livestock keeping as well as responsible ways of farming are some of the programs that will be seeing the light during implementation of the project.

This is the third time that Organization of the
Petroleum Exporting Countries is supporting poverty reduction programs
in Tanzania, the first was with Mtwara and Lindi Phase 1 in which OPEC
pledged US $ 10 Million and seeing that it was done well OPEC II later
followed with US $ 12 million in the same Mtwara and Lindi regions.
