UGANDAN URBAN MANAGERS VISIT EAC HEADQUARTERS
Secretary General applauds Mayor of Arusha City
East African Community Secretariat, Arusha, 19 March 2013:
A 320-strong delegation of Ugandan urban managers today paid a working
visit to the EAC Headquarters in Arusha, Tanzania and held discussions
with the Secretary General Amb. Dr. Richard Sezibera.
Led by Mayor and Chairman of
Urban Authorities Association of Uganda, Mr. Johnson Muyanga, the
Uganda’s urban managers consisting mainly of City/Town Council Mayors,
Directors, Town Clerks, Chief Finance Officers, and Secretaries
exchanged views with the Secretary General on various issues pertaining
to East African integration, the development process and the role of
local/urban authorities.
Amb. Sezibera urged the leaders
not to put barriers to trade especially on transit goods in their
respective localities but “join us in addressing the menace which is a
threat to the ideals of our integration process”.
The Secretary General applauded
the Mayor of Arusha City Gaudence Lyimo for the “Keep Arusha City Clean”
initiative which has seen the city becoming one of the cleanest in the
region.
“I congratulate the leadership
of Arusha city for this initiative, Arusha is the capital of our
Community, it is very a good host to us, the cleanliness and order being
witnessed today is a reflection of a determined leadership and people,”
noted Amb. Sezibera.
Present at the occasion was the
Deputy Secretary General in charge Productive and Social Sectors Hon.
Jesca Eriyo and the Secretary General of Urban Authorities Association
of Uganda, Mr. James Kiiza Amooti.
The delegation of Ugandan urban managers is on a study tour of Arusha City Council from the 17 to 22 March 2013 with the theme; Innovations and Options in Service Delivery and Practical Lessons for Urban Managers.
The key objective of the tour is
to provide practical learning insights in the areas of: revenue
mobilization mechanisms; street furniture; human resource management;
management of Council meetings; greening schemes and beautification
initiatives; urban agriculture; management of waste; community
involvement mechanisms; and transport management.
