Arusha Gymkhana Club, Golf Section hosted the Eid Golf Day on
August 1 in the spirit of Eid ul Fitr. This tournament adopted a
Greensome mode of play unlike the usual Stableford format used in most
of the previous ones. Golfers sign up as a team of two players and tee
off together.
They choose the best ball and take alternate shots till the ball is holed out. The players play off a combined handicap allowance.

Greensome format is quite challenging and
interesting way to golf as this is not the usual mode of play and
practice most of the season. Like in life, in Greensome play format the
partner counts for all the good and the not so good shots. However, the
spirit is to balance the partners strength and weaknesses efficiently
to a decent par or bogey or double bogey. It could be described as a
partner to par style of play and sort of a sporty version of the
sparring partner in regular life.
This tournament had a full field of 48 golfers in
24 teams. The play concluded with the award ceremony followed by
dinner. The winners were Dave Mulligan and Daniel Korpela with 40
points followed by Phillip Wambugu and Kamal Pal Jandu at 39 and the
third place was taken by the father son duo of Hussein Kermali and Ali
Raza Kermali with a score of 38. The winners were awarded gift
certificates for the Gymkhana Pro Shop. The Eid Golf Day was sponsored
by the Muslim Golfers led by Amir Somji and Golf Captain Ashik
Nanabhai.
Dinner was a lavish Handi Biryani spread and
assorted side refreshments. Amir Somji and Captain Nanabhai made the
evening very pleasant with their contagious humor and encouraged all
the junior golfers to continue with their hard work and keep improving
their game. Dinner was open to all present thereby reflecting the true
spirit of Eid which is a celebration of giving and generosity. Special
thanks to the Gymkhana pro Olais Mollel for impeccable course
management and sports member Shakir Bandali and Captain Nanabhai for
belting out another successful tournament.
